Generally, a pistachio tree takes between 5 and 6 years to bear its first fruits, provided that a grafted plant is used and the farm has irrigation. The grafted plant from Agróptimum has shown to bear its first fruits at 3.5 years, thanks to its quality and the agronomic management of the team. Generally, a pistachio tree takes to reach maturity, and thus full production, between 7 and 9 years.
Pistachios can be planted throughout the year, except in the summer dry months, if a potted plant is used.
The best time to plant pistachios is from November to March. This is because during those months the plant is in winter dormancy and does not suffer stress from lack of water or from transplantation.
Due to its climatic conditions, the best areas in Spain to plant pistachios are: Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Aragón, Castilla y León, Catalonia, and northern Andalusia.
One hectare of pistachio can produce between €13,750 and €16,500 in income. All of this without accounting for maintenance expenses and for an adult pistachio farm, cultivated in a 6 x 3 frame, at a harvest price of between €2.5 and €3/kg and an average production of 10 kg/tree. Agróptimum recommends the 6 x 3 planting frame because it allows for the most plants per hectare to be cultivated without compromising production per tree.
An adult pistachio tree produces between 8 and 12 kg of green pistachio. The amount produced depends on the amount of water the tree has received, the hours of heat in spring and summer, and the age of the tree.
