Grow more with less: the new pistachio agriculture

Sustainability is the driving force behind every decision we make. We promote R&D projects, develop advanced agronomic solutions, and apply cutting-edge technology to build a more efficient, more aware pistachio model that is ready for future generations.

We innovate to endure

Sustainable agriculture plays a crucial role in the preservation of the environment and the promotion of biodiversity. For this reason, at Agróptimum, sustainability is more than just a word. It is the central axis of our processes, a long-term commitment, and a way to create a responsible pistachio crop committed to the circular economy.

The auxiliary fauna, our ally

Insect hotels are structures designed with natural materials to provide shelter for beneficial insects such as bees, ladybugs, or beetles. They promote pollination, increasing production, and help with the natural control of pests by housing predators of invasive species.

Additionally, they contribute to maintaining the biodiversity of the environment and serve as an educational tool, raising awareness about the importance of insects in sustainable agriculture.

We regenerate the soil to ensure the future

Cover crops are a key practice for creating sustainable pistachio plantations. Sown in unproductive areas, they protect the soil from erosion, improve its structure and water retention, and promote biodiversity, serving as a refuge for pollinators and beneficial insects.

Additionally, they help regulate the soil microclimate, increase nutrients, and reduce dependency on external inputs while limiting weed growth. This technique enhances productivity, farm health, and helps to tackle the challenges of climate change.

Responsible fertilization and irrigation

At Agróptimum, we bet on responsible fertilization, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and using minerals and microorganisms that optimize the absorption of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This protects the soil, strengthens the plants, and increases their resistance to drought.

We complement this practice with the optimization of water resources, ensuring that every drop of water is used to the maximum. We have irrigation and moisture monitoring systems, we work on pistachio genetics that require less water, and we have implemented a rainwater collection system that allows us to save 11,800 m³ per year.

Our R&D projects: applied scientific innovation in pistachio cultivation

We investigate, innovate, and lead. Our R&D projects advance in the improvement of pistachios, optimizing each phase of cultivation and marking a before and after in Spanish agriculture.

Genetic improvement of the pistachio tree

We drive innovation in Spanish pistachio through genetic improvement. Together with UCO and with European support, we develop new varieties that are more productive, resistant, and of higher quality, adapted to the climate and soil of Spain. A project that combines science and technology to make pistachio a more efficient and competitive crop.

Artificial Intelligence for efficiency

We participate in Life-AIs, a project funded by the European Union's LIFE environmental program that applies technologies such as computer vision and artificial intelligence to monitor crops and precisely manage each plant. This innovation allows for crop prediction, detection of vegetative states, and the application of treatments only where needed, reducing environmental impact and improving the management of pistachio plantations and other crops in Spain.

OP Biotech Program

We are part of the OP Biotech Program to develop biotechnological solutions that help pistachios withstand drought better and absorb water more efficiently. We study how certain microorganisms can benefit the plant and create field-applicable tools, bringing innovation to crops in water-scarce areas and opening a new future for dryland farms.

Research agreement for warm areas

We are part of a research agreement designed to adapt pistachio cultivation to warm and dry climates. Together with scientific partners, we analyze varieties, agronomic practices, and tools that allow the crop to thrive in high-temperature conditions, expanding its potential in regions where pistachios have not yet been optimized.

Predictive analysis of the harvest using Artificial Intelligence

We are developing a system based on artificial intelligence and sensors capable of measuring and mapping the floral buds of pistachios to accurately anticipate the harvest. This technology allows for the adjustment of nutrition and irrigation plans according to the expected production and optimizes agronomic decisions that improve the yield of the plantations.

Study on artificial pollination in pistachio

We develop artificial pollination techniques to improve the reproductive efficiency of pistachios and ensure higher levels of setting in variable conditions. With controlled methods and agronomic precision, we enhance the productivity of the crop, addressing environmental challenges and expanding its productive potential.
